My name is Melanie Figg. I first discovered coaching, and the power of a good coach, while participating in a leadership program in 1999. I have 9 years of substantial experience as an executive and personal coach, including 4 years of coaching part-time in a very rigorous international leadership program. I have more than 25 years coaching people with their creative projects and related gremlins (procrastination, accountability, organization, self-doubt, etc). I am a certified Co-Active Coach (CPCC), as well as a member of the International Coaches Federation (ICF).
I am a candid and encouraging coach, and I have a fierce courage to help my clients get what where they want to be. I am an award-winning poet and an enthusiastic teacher, and I bring that creativity to my work with coaching clients. I use metaphor to expand learning offer fresh distinctions that clarify ideas and create new openings for people. I offer fun, creative homework for my clients so they can generate potent insights and discover new options.
As an artist, I bring fresh perspectives that cause clients to see and think differently and get unstuck quicker. I’m uniquely qualified to coach people looking to add more creative or spiritual space into their lives. I firmly believe everyone needs to honor the Imagination and cultivate their creative side—be it through painting, writing, gardening, cooking, singing, whatever.
I've built a successful career in nonprofit management that makes room for my creative pursuits. I have built development and communication departments in higher education, human services, youth education, health care, social justice, and the performing and literary arts. I choose my “day jobs” carefully—pursuing mission-driven work in nonprofit organizations that supports my value system. With my “real time” I build the life of a creative solopreneur—researching new projects, creating new classes, mentoring people one-on-one, developing and expanding arts programming, and curating readings and literary art tours of local galleries and museums.
I believe in the body – its expressive voice through metaphor, and its ability to expand our understanding and experience once we learn its language.
I am a committed yogi, and am a big fan of mindfulness – I have gained much personal freedom from my yoga and meditation practice. I often use mindfulness practices with my clients.
I got married later in life (40!) and am now a stepmother to two boys. I have been astonished by how hard it is being a stepmom, and I am committed to supporting both new and veteran stepmothers through my coaching.
I am not perfect, and I don’t expect you to be. Like most people, I work to change unproductive habits. I have a coach who keeps my perspective from getting too out-of-whack, and I rely upon friends and other supporters. I enjoy reading, swimming, and going to museums. I care about healthy food, and I love trying new restaurants. I enjoy meeting new people and finding out what’s important to them. I'd love to talk with you and see how working me with as your coach could help you create a life you really love and are proud of. Tick tock, life's short.
